Difference Between Dropping and Withdrawing

Drop

  • A drop happens before the drop deadline.
    • You can drop a course during the first week of the block (Days 1-8)
  • A dropped course does not appear on your transcript.

Withdraw

  • A withdrawal happens after the drop deadline and before the withdrawal deadline.
    • You can withdraw from a course after the first week (Days 9-29)
  • A withdrawn course appears on your transcript with a W.
  • A W does not affect GPA.

What happens if a course is not withdrawn before the deadline?

  • If a student stops attending and does not withdraw by the deadline, the result is an Unofficial Withdrawal (UW).
  • A UW counts as a failing grade in GPA.

Deadlines

Students should check the Academic Calendar for current drop and withdrawal deadlines.
