The ELA is about general English ability. It is not based on one course or textbook. Below are some suggestions that can help you do your best on the English Language Assessment (ELA).
Tips:
- Practice reading and writing consistently in your current course.
- If you are in EnglishConnect 3 and want to get into PathwayConnect, focus on reading and writing in EC3. Complete EC3 levels 3 or 4 for Reading and Writing.
- If you are in EnglishConnect 1 or 2 and want to get into EC3, do extra reading and writing practice.
- Take a practice test to learn the format. Click here for a practice reading test. Choose "Try a Practice Test" > "Reading Test".
Before the Test:
- Sleep well the night before.
- Make sure you have enough time to finish (about 1 hour).
- Choose a quiet place with no distractions, if possible.
- Check your internet connection.
- Use a computer, not a phone, if possible.
- Close other apps or browser tabs so the test works smoothly.
During the Test:
- Take your time. Do not rush.
- Reading Section: If you don't know the answer, choose your best guess and continue. Do not spend too much time on one question.
- Writing Section: Write as much as you can. Use complete sentences. Try to organize your ideas (first, next, finally).
- If you do Reading and Writing on the same day, take a short break in between.
After the Test:
If you didn't get the score you expected, don't get discouraged. Keep learning and try again when you're ready.
